Dr Ann Whitehouse is one of Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology's senior histopathologists. As a member of the women's health team, she reports breast pathology, gynaecological pathology, and gynaecological (CST) and non-gynaecological (FNAs) cytology.

Dr Whitehouse graduated in medicine from The University of Queensland in 1986 and undertook medical internships at The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and then was an RMO at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Having developed a keen interest in pathology during her undergraduate studies she went on to train in anatomical pathology at laboratories around Australia, including Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Sydney. She was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1994.

She worked as a Senior Registrar at the Royal North Shore Hospital and then as a consultant histopathologist with Sydney laboratory, Hanly Moir Pathology the forerunner of Douglas Hanly Moir Pathology. It was here she developed her interest in breast pathology.

In 1997, she moved to Queensland where working in private pathology in Brisbane she continued to develop her expertise in breast pathology and expanded her areas of interest to include cytopathology and gynaecological pathology.

Dr Whitehouse joined Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology in 2001. She also took up the position of Visiting Medical Officer in at the Mater Public Hospital reporting breast pathology, a role she held until 2005.

She has memberships of the Australian Division of the International Academy of Pathology; the International Society of Cytology; Australian Society of Cytology; Australian Breast Society; International Society of Breast Pathology; Australian and New Zealand Society for Vulvovaginal Disease; Australian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology; United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology; and the International Gynecologic Cancer Society.

Among her roles at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, Dr Whitehouse supervises HER2 testing and she is the Supervising Pathologist for the Breast Screen Queensland Bundaberg Service. She also participates with colleagues in regular breast and gynaecology multidisciplinary team meetings at the Holy Spirit Northside, Mater, Wesley and Royal Brisbane and Women's hospitals.

Dr Whitehouse enjoys collaborating with colleagues in such a fast-changing field as breast and gynaecological pathology and organises weekly in-house meetings to discuss relevant topics such as recent articles, meetings and laboratory processes. She also enjoys the challenges presented by complex cases and gains particular satisfaction from bringing together information from diverse sources to prepare comprehensive, detailed and clinically useful reports.
