Special interests: dermatopathology and
lymphoproliferative disorders
Dr Margreth van Aartsen is a histopathologist at Sullivan
Nicolaides Pathology, Brisbane. She obtained her MBChB from
the University of the Free State (Bloemfontein, South Africa),
graduating in 2000 and migrating to Australia in 2003.
After spending several years working as a clinician
predominantly in public hospitals in South Africa and Australia,
she decided to pursue her interest in pathology. She joined
the anatomical pathology training program in Queensland and worked
in various laboratories in South East Queensland, gaining
Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in
2011.
Before joining Sullivan and Nicolaides Pathology, Dr van Aartsen
worked as a staff specialist in anatomical pathology in
Albury-Wodonga for six years, where she performed the duties of
Pathologist in Charge during the final three and a half
years. She reported a broad range of specimens, including
cases from general practitioners as well as more complex general
and specialist surgical cases and diagnostic biopsies. Having
participated in frequent multidisciplinary meetings during this
time she values the importance of good and open communication among
interdisciplinary colleagues.
Dr van Aartsen has a keen interest in ongoing education and
training of junior staff. She was the primary supervisor for
anatomical pathology registrars while at Albury-Wodonga and has
been actively involved in teaching pathology to medical students in
Queensland and at the UNSW Rural Clinical School, Albury
Campus.
In 2017, after "a wonderful and rewarding experience" on the
NSW-Victorian Border she, her husband and two sausage dogs decided
to return to Brisbane. She joined Sullivan and Nicolaides
Pathology in order to pursue a long-standing interest in
dermatopathology.
