Dr Peter Kanowski is one of Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology's most senior pathologists and Pathologist-in-Charge of the Townsville laboratory, a position he has held for more than 20 years.  As a consultant histopathologist, he reports across a range of surgical pathology with special expertise in gastrointestinal pathology and breast pathology. He also oversees clinical testing services for a large area of Northern and Western Queensland that stretches from Cardwell in the north to Bowen in the south and to Hughenden and Mount Isa in the west. In Townsville, the practice provides a 24-hour service to the Mater Hospital, Mater Emergency Department and the Icon Cancer Care Centre.

Dr Kanowski graduated in medicine from the University of Queensland in 1984 and completed internships at Princess Alexandra and Royal Brisbane Hospitals. He went on to train in general pathology at the Royal Brisbane Hospital with one year of microbiology at Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1992.  In early 1993, he joined a private pathology partnership in Townsville that in 1997 became part of Sonic Healthcare.

Dr Kanowski is an active member of the local medical community, serving on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Mater Private Hospital and the Medical Advisory Committee of the Vision Eye Institute. With a main field of interest in GI pathology, he participates in weekly interdisciplinary specialist meetings with gastroenterologists and registrars at the Townsville Hospital and contributes to regular oncology meetings at the Icon Cancer Care Centre to review GI and hepatology cases.  He also attends oncology meetings for urology, haematology, skin and lung cancer cases.  Dr Kanowski also reports breast pathology and attends the multidisciplinary combined private and public breast cancer meeting.

He derives particular professional satisfaction from the fact that the practice is able to provide an all-encompassing, yet in-depth diagnostic service to the many different specialist practitioners in the Townsville area, while delivering an effective, high-quality community pathology service right across the region. He believes well-founded working relationships within the local medical community are essential to achieving this.
